What's Going On: July 2021

Are you online?

Pride month has come and gone once again. July is always a little quieter in comparison, making this a short update. Stay tuned though, next week we’ll have our annual Pride Recap article up in full blazing colour for you.

On the topic of updates, our team has discussed putting our internal updates in this monthly post. You might have seen the inclusion of our volunteer calls and occasionally what articles are coming next. We’ve found that these details haven’t fit smoothly into the format here, because the point of the What’s Going On is it’s about the aro community. It’s about what aromantics other than our team are doing. And so we have decided to put together a monthly Inside AUREA post. This piece will come after our monthly team meeting, include important events, discussion points, volunteer calls, our aims, and paint a clearer picture for you of what’s going on behind the scenes here. It won’t have a regular update schedule as we’re an international team made up of ten people and that makes our meetings difficult to schedule. Generally our team meeting is the first weekend of the month and Inside AUREA will always come the Monday after the meeting. Here’s to transparency!

Carnival of Aros has been undergoing some changes these late few months. For a while there the aromantic community was running it without direction and we thank all the people who took it upon themselves to host the Carnival simply because they cared enough to see it continue. CoA is now under new management and has a whole team running the show. If you’d like to get involved and volunteer to host, head on over to the website HERE. The June round-up for the topic Pride and Solidarity will be posted in the next couple of days and we’ll update here with the link when it does.

In Denmark, Pride is in August and Asexual Association Denmark is planning a discussion specifically about Aromanticism on Saturday August 21st at 12:30PM - 1:30PM CEST/CET. Because of COVID-19 it will be possible to participate online, and because of World Pride it will be in English! This is a part of the Human Rights Program during World Pride in Copenhagen. More details to come. Tune into this panel and you’ll see at least two aros participating (they’re currently looking for more) including our new Organisational Outreach Manager: Sofia.

Volunteer Calls

All Worlds Wayferer is a literary magazine that specializes in character-and-theme-driven speculative fiction. Their summer solstice issue for 2021 is currently looking for a-spec characters for their anthology. If you’d like to submit a piece there’s only one week left to do so! So hurry and get your writing in a fantastic published book where it belongs.

AUREA is currently recruiting for a number of positions on the AUREA team, as outlined on our Volunteers Page. Please note that these are all unpaid volunteer positions, and you would be expected to dedicate a certain amount of your free time to helping run AUREA. If you are interested in any of the listed roles and believe you have the relevant experience, we’d love to hear from you! Email us at contact@aromanticism.org, and include the role title you’re interested in in the subject line. We are looking to diversify in all positions, particularly with the following people:

  • AlloAros

  • Cis Men

  • Disabled people

  • People from countries outside of the U.S.

  • People of colour

  • Trans Men/Transmasculine

  • Trans Women/Transfeminine

Aros in the media

Aromantic people describe what it's like to feel barely any passion or affection towards others by Julia Naftulin

Aromanticism, a sexual identity where a person feels little to no romantic attraction to others, is misunderstood.

This is a general 101 piece that quotes from other interviews, including one with aromantic/asexual activist Yasmin Benoit, and does contain some inaccuracies.

Pride Week: Dicebreaker recommends Monsterhearts 2 - an RPG about being queer and loving demons by Alex Meehan

Monsterhearts 2 is an openly queer-oriented tabletop roleplaying game that invites its players to explore themes of sexuality and gender through the lens of a supernatural teenage romance dripping with angst.

Learn more about this RPG and how it claims to allow for aromantic explorations and connections. Will it deliver as it has promised to?

Since we’re only a day or two (time zones) into July that’s all we have for articles this month so far. Our Pride Recap however, coming next week, is overflowing with aros making the news.
