What's Going On: June 2021
Are You Online?
Aromantics Create Pride is back! If you’ve got a creation you think deserves some attention, apply to our event before the 14th of June to get that and more. For more detailed information about the event click here and to go straight to the sign up sheet click here.
Capitalizing the A! is a panel all about aromantic and asexual awareness. Maya Sims will be hosting this event via Zoom on the 12th of June, 2pm EST. Keep an eye on her Twitter @fairymsimi for the upcoming FAQ!
#AggressivelyArospecWeek is a week spent promoting arospec fancontent by arospec creators. Between the 20th and the 26th of June share your passion and creations. They have both a Tumblr and a Twitter for you to engage with. Whether you have something to submit or are excited to see what other aros are up to, it's going to be an exciting week!
This next one is less an article or online event, but it is still online, so we think it counts! If you search ‘Pride’ in Google right now a multitude of pride flags drop down the screen in a shower of confetti, and we were delighted to see the familiar shades of green fall with all the rest! Hopefully Google will keep this fun feature year round but just in case they don’t, make sure you check it out soon!
Out and About?
It’s been a while since we’ve been able to include this section and we’ve missed it! This month we have something for the Aussies, or more specifically, those in Southeast Queensland.
The 60th annual Queen’s Ball event is being hosted at Brisbane City Hall on the 19th of June. Starting as a house party on Mount Tamborine in 1962 (when being gay was definitely illegal), this is one of the longest running events of its kind in the world. The Queen’s Ball predates the Sydney Mardi Gras by sixteen years, and even Stonewall was still seven years away!
These days the Queen’s Ball is a celebration of queer culture and community, with awards to honour the outstanding achievements of both people and organisations in the LGBTIQA+ community.
This is why we are proud to announce that Alex, our very own secretary, has been nominated in the ‘Activist of the Year’ category for aer work in aromantic education and visiblity! We couldn’t be more proud of aer, and wish aer the best of luck! Voting has unfortuantely closed, but tickets are still available for those who want to attend a fun night and celebrate the amazing members of the LGBTQIA+ community.
